The Society for Creative Anachronisms

For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated with medieval history, especially that of Europe, in particular Britain. I have always loved stories with knights and damsels, castles and quests. Finding the Society for Creative Anachronisms was a dream come true for me.

"The avowed purpose of the SCA is the study and recreation of the European Middle Ages, its crafts, sciences, arts, traditions, literature, etc. The SCA "period" is defined to be Western civilization before 1600 AD, concentrating on the Western European High Middle Ages. Under the aegis of the SCA we study dance, calligraphy, martial arts, cooking, metalwork, stained glass, costuming, literature... well, if they did it, somebody in the SCA does it" - this is the opening statement from the official SCA website page for newcomers.

We recreate the geographical and social hierarchies with kingdoms, baronies and shires; royalty, nobles, artisans and merchants. We host events that include combat tournaments, art and science competitions, feasts and revels. We hold the ideals of chivalry dear and nothing is more important than honour and loyalty.

MY SCA HOUSEHOLDS

Clan MacThearlaich - My household of origin and the family of my persona, Lady Ceara inghean mhic Thearlaich. We, of the original members. joined the SCA together.

House Sable Ram - The household of my husband. Long standing with fun traditions, this household is known for it's friendliness and partying.

House MacLeod - This is the household of our peers.  Baron Sir Simon MacLeod is the Knight to whom my husband is squired and Baroness Dame Katherine Radford of Dreywick is the Pelican to whom I am a protégé.

MY SCA PERSONA

My SCA Persona - My persona is a 12th century Scot named Baintighearna Ceara inghean mhic Thearlaich. "Baintighearna" is Scots Gaelic for "Lady".  "Ceara" is my Christian name.  "inghean" means "daughter of". "mhic" signifies that my father was Clan Chieftain and "Thearlaich" is Scots Gaelic for "Charles", my father's name.  So my name breaks down as "Lady Ceara, daughter of Clan Chieftain Charles."  At the death of my father, my brother, Anacleatus McTerlach became head of our family along with his saucy French wife, Marie Gautrot.

When I was a young lass, a handsome Norse warrior named Ulfr sleggja Bjarnarson came to our village and after fulfilling a quest and riddle given him by my brother to prove his worth, he took me to wife.  For ten years now he has been the love of my life.

To the left is my Coat of Arms that is registered with the SCA.  The blazon for my coats of arms is as follows: "Quarterly Or and argent, a phoenix rising gules and a bordure sable".

MY SCA INTERESTS

Heraldry - To enhance the medieval ambiance of SCA events, participants adopt personas and heraldic insignia with a medieval flavor, which they use on a long-term basis.  I have held the office of Herald for the Shire of Tir Briste as well as the Kingdom office of Cypher Herald.

Illumination - Illumination is a scribal art. The scribes of the SCA study manuscripts and produce scrolls for the group to use as award presentations.
